To inform students at the University of Florida
about the Actuarial Science profession as well as provide an outlet for
students to interact with other students interested in the field.
Our goal is to inform those already interested in the field and to
attract those students that have never heard of an Actuary.
Our Activities
Company Presentations
Each semester companies visit the
University of Florida to recruit students interested in Actuarial
Science for internships and/or full-time positions. The
presentations provide students with a great deal of knowledge about each
respective company. They also give students a chance to meet
company representatives, which is a great networking opportunity.
Resume/Interviewing Workshops
Each year the club sets up a
resume/interviewing workshop with the Career Resource Center (CRC) for
our members. This is a chance for new students to learn about the do's
and don'ts of creating a resume. These workshops take place in the
beginning of the Fall semester, so members can become more prepared for
the interviewing process.
Social Events
We want everyone in the club to have a chance to get to know each other
better, and to take some time to relax from studying for all of these
exams. These events will be discussed in the first meeting of each
semester.
Fundraising
This is also something new that we are doing.
We are going to try to have at least one fundraising event per school year to
raise money for actuarial exam study supplies or fulfill any other club
financial need.
As a participating member you will gain access to the
Study
Materials Library
and you can post your resume in our
Member Directory!
If you think the club is something that
you would like to be a part of, then fill out the
FASS MEMBER SURVEY
and email it to the Secretary (email is at the bottom of the survey).
Also, make sure you are either in our group (UF Actuaries) on
facebook.com, or that you are on our
listserv
so
you can begin receiving information about our meetings.
We look forward to meeting you!!
Start by filling out our
FASS Member Survey
each semester
and email it to the Secretary (email is at the bottom of the survey),
then just put yourself on the
actuary list-serve,
or if you have a
Facebook.com
account, you can add our group "UF Actuaries." Joining us on
facebook will help you get even more involved through our discussion
board, updates, event flyers, and meeting other members in the group. The same messages
are sent out to facebook and the listserv. We will keep you updated
on speakers that are coming to visit and any meetings that we will be
having either to form study groups or to discuss anything that the
actuary group as a whole would like to discuss. Also, check back at this
website for updates! We will post any new events up on the website under
the Club Calendar.
The meetings are open to the public, so come check us out!
Remember the club is run by you, the members. So get active and get on
your way to becoming an Actuary!!!

The future is
full of uncertainty. Some of the events that can happen are undesirable.
"Risk" is the possibility that an undesirable event will occur.
Actuaries are experts in:
The impact of
undesirable events can be both emotional and financial. Reducing the
likelihood of these events helps relieve emotional pain. But some
events, such as death, cannot be totally avoided. So, reducing their
financial impact is very important. Actuaries are the leading
professionals in finding ways to manage risk. It takes a combination of
strong analytical skills, business knowledge and understanding of human
behavior to design and manage programs that control risk.
Actuaries love what
they do. Their work is intellectually challenging and they are very
well-paid. Actuaries are key players in the management team of the
companies that employ them. In a fast-changing world, with new risks and
the need for ever-more creative ways to tackle them, there is the
constant opportunity for personal and professional growth in an
actuarial career, and the pleasure of life-long learning. Most actuaries
work in a pleasant environment, alongside other
professionals, and enjoy the respect of
their peers.
This is why the
actuarial profession has consistently been rated as one of the top five
jobs in the United States according to
Jobs Rated Almanac.
